Cog in the wheel

“The individual appears for an instant, joins the community of thought, modifies it and dies; but the species, that dies not, reaps the fruit of his ephemeral existence.”
— A.S. Byatt

There was a time and place, such was a typical town…
… there was a butcher, couple of farmers, a barber, a smith, a midwife and more…
They had their task set and their eyes set to the task…
There was no escape, no phrase called cog in the wheel, they were all part of an ecosystem
and they paid their dues.
If the butcher didnt cut, there was no meat, if the smith didnt melt there were no tools,
no wood to burn, no farmer, no food and no town… that would be the end.

Then came the corporation…
and we got walls and layers to hide behind,
walls to blame, to say, we are just a cog in the wheel…
… we got comfortable behind the layers.

We all got our excuse to not do our bit, not pay our dues to the society…
…we forgot every weak cog slowly breaks the wheel…

Now we do what we think we can and not whats the best…
We call our jobs mediocre and do them as a mediocre…
… and abstain from becoming great.
We dont respect our roles,
we dont respect our contribution to the society,
we live in our bubble…
… and slowly we break the wheel.

Think of a nurse who got bored of her job
and slipped a little and killed someone you care for…
… think of that when you think of not respecting your role in the society…
… think of that when you want to shy away from paying your dues…
… every cog has its role… dont break the wheel…

Having read this I thought it was very enlightening.

I appreciate you taking the time and energy to put this information together.
I once again find myself spending a lot of time both reading and commenting.
But so what, it was still worthwhile!
